Songbyrd Presents

Vinyl Lounge, All Ages

Austin-based singer Taft Mashburn has been winding a path through musical worlds since 2006, when he first began composing and recording music in a bedroom studio. These self-guided recording cycles yielded themselves to playing in bands in Austin beginning in 2008. Immersion in this culture of performance laid the groundwork for the dramatic and vocally intense show that would eventually develop, and for which he is now known. A two year stay in New York City served to introduce a variety of musical styles that broadened creative horizons and helped him discover his voice as a primary instrument.

Taft returned to Austin from New York in 2014 to release Groove Redundant on Austin’s Punctum Records. This debut LP stands as an homage to the pop-rock and indie-rock of the late 90’s and early 2000’s, with tracks that span from the diaristic and existential to the hedonistic and banal. The group of musicians that contributed to Groove Redundant also comprised the lineup for live shows from 2014 to early 2016.

In early 2016, Taft travelled to rural Vermont, where he spent five months in seclusion. This period is marked by an outburst in creative activity as a new cycle of songs emerged from under the New England snow. These earth-bound pieces lean heavily on finger-picked patterns and soaring vocals that hearken to singers like Joanna Newsom and Jeff Buckley. In September of 2016, after having returned to Texas, Taft performed these pieces as a live concert in a recording studio. These recordings comprise his forthcoming album, Goodnight, Plum.
