“And the sound? Well, it’s butter…Each instrument is thoughtfully played, intentional, loose, comfortable and perfectly balanced, with the vocal finessing of Tula Pisano that is agile and strong (think Minnie Riperton and Dakota Staton).” – Nina Goodman, DC Music Review
“novo…knocked me out. … Did I mention how much I dig this sound?” – Corey Brown, No Treble
“…DC’s new electro soul powerhouse.” Will Urquhart, DC Music Review
Defying categorization while evoking the familiar–that is novo’s essence. The DC-based quintet delivers a potent blend of indie, R&B, jazz, and psych rock, which aims for both the mind and the soul. Formed in 2018, novo is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo TJ Turqman (bass) and Gena Photiadis (keys/vocals), and features the unique vocal stylings of Tula Pisano, who deftly weaves intricate melodies that are equal parts evocative and beautiful. Rounding out the lineup are the tasteful and dynamic contributions of guitarist Nikhel Sus and drummer Matt Tredwell. The group’s collective influences yield a sound that is melodic, yet distressed. Retro, yet new. And, above all, full of light and energy.
novo’s members include some of the most in-demand live and session musicians in DC, who have played with a range of artists locally, nationally, and internationally, including the Funk Ark, Staycation, Gordon Sterling & the People, and more.
